I find the concept very interesting and thought this past year of coping with the pandemic and into the fresh air of 2021 would be a great source of inspiration. I do not want to focus on all the shenanigans that went on in 2020, but highlight some ideas. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQ31opRxd0ed0pURvZM8n3ipMo6yr-clw7NYzXZi1P61fQbVD-zMzdCgHluywlDSmsNixgG5dWkczmvFeqHi9rX8ty7Fk8XIRzPQ_Rx0CrA52tXN0uOsLDOw3XcbY18sFY3WDvCS18UNK4/s2559/Quote+Quilt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2559" data-original-width="2166" height="581" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQ31opRxd0ed0pURvZM8n3ipMo6yr-clw7NYzXZi1P61fQbVD-zMzdCgHluywlDSmsNixgG5dWkczmvFeqHi9rX8ty7Fk8XIRzPQ_Rx0CrA52tXN0uOsLDOw3XcbY18sFY3WDvCS18UNK4/w493-h581/Quote+Quilt.jpg" width="493" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I started with square in a square blocks made with solid fabrics. The instructions called for a vine type border, which I stitched and had ready. However, once the appliqued borders were on my quilt, I realized that the quilt was enormous, more suitable for a king size bed than my queen size bed. Also, I decided a quilt of that size would be much too large form me to quilt on my domestic machine. I know my limits and I know I would find it too difficult to machine quilt so large a top. In the end, I removed my lovely borders and attached this simple pink and white border. I'm saving my applique border in hopes that I can use it for another project, shortened, of course. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The blocks are 18 inches and the center is 36 inches. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Joy joy joy! Joy in the Morning! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I have been working on another BOM from Attic Heirlooms. This wall hanging is called Joy in the Morning by Norma Whaley, Timeless Traditions. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Two of my friends convinced me to try this applique and embroidery challenge. Most of the applique is wool with a few cotton fabric pieces that make it more varied and interesting. The alternate blocks are all cotton.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I am really enjoying each of these little 6-inch blocks. It has been fun searching through my embroidery threads and silk ribbons to make each block special. I'm using the pattern photo to guide my color choices for the most part, a few changes here and there. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It is good to have something absorbing to work on in the time of quarantine and isolation. My husband and I were finally able to take our new camper to the North Maine Woods recently. We went swimming and relaxed for a couple of days. It is a long ride to where we like to camp but we enjoy the ride, too. I worked on a simple backstitch embroidery piece while we were there. I'll post about that soon. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Take care! Stay safe and stay home. Wash your hands. Wear a mask, it's the least we can do, don't you think? Thinking of you, my quilting friends, as I stitch and dream!</div>

I've been participating in Australian Helen Goddin's online free motion tutorials. It's called Flower Power and is free for everyone. This tulip is the first of nine flowers. Colored with Inktense pencils. I bought a new free motion foot last week and I'm getting used to it. I don't think my stitching is as good as it was. It may be a tension problem with my machine. </div>

Stay safe and stay home! I made a foray to a local greenhouse yesterday, but other than that, I really have just been home. Not getting too squirrely yet, but there is a full moon tomorrow and it is making me somewhat tense. We all have to cope with the isolation in our own ways, but let me say that I believe we are doing the right thing by staying home and flattening the curve, a phrase we are all now familiar with. Take care everyone! </div>

Month 3 of Barbara Brackman's BOM Cassandra's Circle. I've completed the large center block, the first 18inch block and this, the second 18 inch block. Not sure if this one will stay as is, I'll have to see how the next few blocks compare.<br />
<br />
I've been isolating myself as much as I can. My husband and daughter are continuing to go to work. We are grateful that they have work and a paycheck, but the risk of exposure to Covid 19 is great. I was having stress headaches, but those are gone now.<br />
<br />
I miss my friends and wish I could invite them into my home for tea and fun, but that will have to wait for another day. Yesterday I received the very sad news that Maine Quilts 2020 has been cancelled. The Pine Tree Quilt Guild has put on a quilt show for over 40 years. This will be the first time we've had to cancel the show. I know my friends are as disappointed as I am but it was the correct decision, I'm sure. Hundreds of volunteers work to put on the show every year. Teachers come from all over the U.S., Canada, and England. Not sure if we have had anyone come from further afield, but it is certainly an international event.<br />
<br />
I did not have any quilts entered in the show this year, but I can imagine how sad those who were exhibiting this year feel right now. This pandemic is one that we will only win if everyone makes the effort to isolate. We are not being asked to fight in the trenches, we are being asked to stay home-home with our loved ones, home with our computers and tvs, home with electricity and heat. Not very difficult is it? Well, of course it is, but by staying in touch with friends and family, by being friendly and courteous to others, we make it easier for all of us to hunker down.<br />

Hello from Quilt Island, my friends. From my little corner in Maine where the coronavirus is beginning to make an impact on all of our lives,it seems that every day the number of cases increases. Being a retired homebody, life has not altered too much for me as I continue to stay at home. My husband and daughter continue to go to work so the routine is much the same. Which is not to say that life will ever be the same, will it? </div>
<br />
I strongly object to the constant use of the large virus image that is used in every newscast about the pandemic. I would prefer to see that symbol with a big X or the "no" symbol on top of the image. I believe that would send a message to all of us that there is hope rather than helplessness. This is a time when all of us in our communities will pull together and help one another.<br />
<br />
Okay, so let's look at what I've been doing in my sewing room!<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCG0yEZ9iOlD3PKtYTvmnpjDvCUGO97PKeYYAGKBQQKdXO_o0o0abyOps_Bf-LT7v80Ktqrx-OiBie0d_AVM9FAnLMzHnPW9iyFwbJnMZUNVcIS7BTkCNF8XqSjC2xoMAbC3Br58yif_8a/s1600/Easter+hen.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCG0yEZ9iOlD3PKtYTvmnpjDvCUGO97PKeYYAGKBQQKdXO_o0o0abyOps_Bf-LT7v80Ktqrx-OiBie0d_AVM9FAnLMzHnPW9iyFwbJnMZUNVcIS7BTkCNF8XqSjC2xoMAbC3Br58yif_8a/s640/Easter+hen.jpg" width="187" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My Easter Hen is a very old UFO that I have put aside a couple of times. The last time was just before Easter one year and when I had trouble with the basket, I put it aside and another Easter slipped by. I've been finishing up a lot of my other UFOs and recently it occurred to me to finish this one up so I pulled it out of the pile. The only thing left to do was attach the borders and do the quilting! I was rather surprised with how much was done! I will post a picture of the finished wall hanging soon. The pattern was offered on The Quilt Show back in 2010. (hangs her head in shame)</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I bought these nine patch blocks at an auction one of my quilt groups held a few years ago. The blocks came from an online swap one member had participated in, so these blocks have been around for many years. The names of participants and their addresses were attached to the blocks. It was fun for me to see where they came from, many from California, Arizona, Colorado, even Hawaii. A long way from Maine, that's for sure. The blocks were meant to be used for an Irish Chain quilt. All the blocks are green and white and there are many shamrocks and other St. Patrick's Day themed fabrics. I added my own prints for the alternate blocks. This is a small quilt for a child and will be donated to a charity. I have quite a few more blocks and have made another quilt similar to this one. Not finished with quilting yet. Oh, and I worked on this on St. Patrick's Day, so it will be a lucky quilt, for sure!</div>

Barbara Brackman has two BOMs going this year. I am participating in the all applique Civil War Quilt that she is calling Cassandra's Circle. My quilt will be all pink and green. Above is one of the eight 18-inch blocks. This one is the Mulberry Wreath. Below is the 36-inch center called Washington's Plume.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here is another UFO that has been languishing for many years. It feels so good to finish a UFO, doesn't it? I feel quite virtuous.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This quilt started when I made the red toile star blocks in the center. I made the center stars and had no idea what to do with next. Eventually I added the green border and from there it grew. I machine quilt most of my quilts on my domestic machine. I saw Cindy Seitz-Krug on The Quilt Show where she showed quilting on a grid. I thought that looked easy (it is but it takes practice!) I mostly do free motion meandering and loop-di-dos but I thought I could try the grid system on this quilt. I wasn't too thrilled with the quilt and I really wasn't too thrilled with my quilting when I was working on it, but by the time I put it on my bed, I thought it was quite nice. I hope you agree. I always wash my quilts when I finish them and I think that covers up a lot of imperfections. </div>
<br />

Stay safe, stay happy, and keep on stitchin'. Aren't you glad you have a stash?</div>

<span style="font-size: small;">I went to the Portland Museum of Art yesterday with my friend Carolyn to see the annual Art in Bloom show. Floral designers chose a work of art as their inspiration. I've shown a few of the offerings. Last year we were part of a small tour group and were given some information about what we were seeing and that led to some interesting discussions. This time we went on our own. Plenty of inspiration for quilters, too! This last photo doesn't convey the delicious scents of spring flowers, unfortunately, but use your imagination. I can't remember which plate was the starting point for this piece but the container is a work of art in itself. Wow! </span></div>

In no particular order, here are some projects I finished in 2019. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5OfXuqjshf_l-EkAL7-S-3hE4jc9vxjVDoBzNC2cVs3wDhmLrUK-b8JgWrn1reZcjMcCx6S5-DATXrNGdKQZFpSPpzfp0vyJkIQlgfgJpEwIJKCC_XW3uAOa2Hqz5_RiSsm8Pbq2K5ZHV/s1600/Jingle.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5OfXuqjshf_l-EkAL7-S-3hE4jc9vxjVDoBzNC2cVs3wDhmLrUK-b8JgWrn1reZcjMcCx6S5-DATXrNGdKQZFpSPpzfp0vyJkIQlgfgJpEwIJKCC_XW3uAOa2Hqz5_RiSsm8Pbq2K5ZHV/s400/Jingle.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
"Jingle" a free online project from Erin Russert. Her quilt had a large central applique with these blocks around the center. There were more pieced blocks. I decided to make a long narrow quilt. The center block was no longer available and I wanted a quilt to hang on my door so I made mine like this. I used the classic Pennsylvania Dutch palette. I discovered Karen Kaye Buckley's leaf templates when I was half way through making this quilt and that sped up the project a lot. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
"Baxter" is my memory quilt from the days when my son and daughter were young. My husband and I would take the kids to Baxter State Park every summer vacation. So many happy memories.</div>

"A Year with Edyta" is my version of the quilt Edyta Sitar designed for The Quilt Show BOM in 2018. I changed the layout and the center block (which is a Lori Holt house block). Each month the BOM pattern was three different quilt blocks that were made three times. So nine blocks each month. Shown at the Back Roads Quilt Show in West Gardiner October 2019</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
"A Year with Jan" was my version of a BOM by Jan Patek offered by Attic Heirlooms in Damariscotta. I made some changes to the pattern. I put kittens in the baskets instead of birds! I omitted a border at the top and bottom of the applique blocks; this is a LARGE quilt and the extra borders would have been too much for me. The applique borders were a real challenge for me. I had to get the quilt top done so I could machine quilt it before the show. I wish I had added more elements to the vines but its done and I am mostly happy with it. </div>

Little zippered pouch from a workshop we did at Back Roads, offered by Kathy B. This has been languishing forevvvvvvvvvvvver! All it needed was binding! </div>

Vinalhaven day trip on a glorious August day. My friend Gaye, my daughter and I took the ferry out of Rockland to spend the day on the island. Gaye had lined up a taxi to take us around the island. We had a wonderful day. So much fun to be taken around to places we never would have seen. The quilts are from the local museum. <div>

We ate on the front porch at this restaurant and watched the crowd stroll by.<br /></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Updating my blog after a lengthy stretch of silence. It's not that I haven't been busy, I've just neglected writing my blog. So let's take a look at what I've made. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I don't really like to make bags and pouches but decided I needed a few new totebags. Recently I cleaned up my sewing room and discovered a few very nice bags I had made over the years but, guess what? Filled with unfinished projects! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First up is the Clydebank tote offered from Sew Sweetness. She has a very detailed video tutorial to make this bag. I admit I got the handles wrong on the first try. I attached the handles (top seam) so that the bag looked more like a tank top. Hard to thread that over your shoulder! After a seam ripper session, all was well. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-pPwhpshoJSQG3OFIHt-EhnArXDooYnStUHeBjWXin43-bI62khfu5abVgmYYct-w5so20m1cqUP-SfpJZ2hl5grqDQxzQtdCcxmRwOt0CMSrOQbroW3p46_5nLgpSl1vflkZTBa99JVZ/s1600/Clydebank+tote.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-pPwhpshoJSQG3OFIHt-EhnArXDooYnStUHeBjWXin43-bI62khfu5abVgmYYct-w5so20m1cqUP-SfpJZ2hl5grqDQxzQtdCcxmRwOt0CMSrOQbroW3p46_5nLgpSl1vflkZTBa99JVZ/s640/Clydebank+tote.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lots of roomy zippers.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I started a BOM from Gay Bomer of Sentimental Stitches. The blocks are taken from an old quilt from the late 1800s. Each month directions will be provided for five blocks-one large block 12 inches finished-and four small 5 inch blocks. No block names are given but the large block is Rolling Stone. The green block is Square in a Square. The blue block is Birds in the Air. I don't know the other two blocks. I'm calling the bottom right "the Knot Block".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I stitched this knot block by hand and it was rather wobbly so I made another one on my machine and it has turned out much better. Y-seam construction. Not so hard to do especially since I once made a whole quilt of stars using Y-seams. You have to hold your tongue just right.</div>

Isn't this a darling little block? Maybe a Weathervane, not sure. 5 inches!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The BOM is free the first month and available for purchase after the month. On-going for 14 months. Very potato chippy. </div>

I think this will be a fun bag for the summer. There was a sample bag made up at the shop so I got to see the size and have a look inside. Lots of inside pockets and there is a zipper to keep my belongings safe. The owner at Cotton Weeds kindly labeled my fabrics so I know what is what. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was going to buy Bosal for soft interfacing but they were out at Cotton Weeds, so I have decided to use the leftovers from other bag projects. I kind of grit my teeth about making bags, but will put the effort into making this one. I just have to make the time to get it done. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Did you read about the many Barred Owls in people's backyards? The poor birds were so hungry they were hanging out at birdfeeders hoping for a meal of squirrel or small bird, I assume. Our Maine winter of snow and thaw made the snow crust too tough for the little birds to break through for mice or whatever they eat. I became quite attached to this little one and hope he/she made it.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For some reason (avoidance of working on UFOs!) I decided to work on a little quilt last week. I have a copy of Gai Perry's book Color From the Heart. There are a number of challenges in the book involving color. The first challenge was to cut three 2 inch squares from 40 different fabrics. Those squares are put in a bag and then you pick them out randomly and set them one by one in the rows as above. You are allowed to rearrange a bit at the end, which I did somewhat. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj97LXaFMO1eRKyCRol-NydqjyX9Neu2rieIlS778LITExRQEDr3KDDGDHaRMXabU2xdkUYcR9_DRGM9BzexBCNQ4xZOBz2hLXgdXUAPereLU4D4JlljKpsMv8GhLu0vSwEQDEWSA7LD_NA/s1600/20190326_115212.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj97LXaFMO1eRKyCRol-NydqjyX9Neu2rieIlS778LITExRQEDr3KDDGDHaRMXabU2xdkUYcR9_DRGM9BzexBCNQ4xZOBz2hLXgdXUAPereLU4D4JlljKpsMv8GhLu0vSwEQDEWSA7LD_NA/s640/20190326_115212.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sew squares together and then choose colors you want to emphasize for the borders. The point of the exercise is to learn that if the pieces are small enough, then all colors go together. Not really sure that it worked for me but I do like my little quilt. I played with free motion quilting and am pleased with that. Not hanging very straight on my door. I did cut my squares 2 1/2 inches rather than 2 inches. Not sure that would really make any difference. Looking at her example in the book, given the overall size mentioned and the size of the borders, I think she cut 2 1/2 inch, too. I'd like to try this again. If I can remember, I will cut 3 squares from fabrics that I am using for other projects and toss them in a basket for future use. In fact...I have a big supply of 2 1/2 inch strips around here somewhere....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm also working on an embroidery project and signed on for "Cheddarback" a BOM from Gaye Bomers of Sentimental Stitches. Five blocks each month. How hard can it be to find the time for that? I so enjoyed the Edyta Sitar BOM last year and this will be similar. Also signed up for a wall hanging with Back Roads. The temptations are never-ending, aren't they?</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I set aside my quilting for a few days while I obsessively knit this hat. It is the Ullared cap from Charlene Schurch's book Hats On! Oh, it was so fun to knit this hat. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9r9894wfdCP_szcK7bcjGxfGOAILcKVaLN5Yj_DdioWg2dAY1pRF4TReszltLbYwbRm1dB4a_7BHVwuw3DR13C0vi47HDC8mWsLE3AP2G_ZD7JoxcXKsdVV2xJEsA8JGwOnM2SS6RmvSL/s1600/Ullared+hat+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9r9894wfdCP_szcK7bcjGxfGOAILcKVaLN5Yj_DdioWg2dAY1pRF4TReszltLbYwbRm1dB4a_7BHVwuw3DR13C0vi47HDC8mWsLE3AP2G_ZD7JoxcXKsdVV2xJEsA8JGwOnM2SS6RmvSL/s640/Ullared+hat+2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I knit this pattern once before but it was too small and I made a mess of the crown decreases. This time around I knit a larger size. I don't like the tight skull cap look. My hat is knit from Plymouth Galway wool from Attic Heirlooms in Damariscotta. Such a lovely yarn and the hat is warm and cozy. I bought more yarn to make a pair of mittens.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My poor wrist is quite sore from all this intense knitting. I gave up knitting while I was working because my job required me to be on the computer all day, so I needed to take care of my hands. Now that I'm retired I took up knitting again, but this project was too much.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have always knit "English style" but taught myself how to knit "Continental" to save my wrists. Unfortunately, I thought I could do both with this hat, white in my left hand and blue in my right hand, but that was still to much for my right hand and wrist. Once I am fully recovered, I will hold the two colors in my left hand and also limit my knitting time every day. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm working on the borders for my Jan Patek BOM from 2018. I am enjoying the hand applique and choosing all the fabrics. I will be going on a quilt retreat in a few weeks and may take this along with me. If I bring my little bendy lamp, I think I will have enough light for this kind of work. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have not used my sewing machine for a bit as I want to concentrate on finishing up this UFO. I do feel the siren call of a new project but am trying to resist. </div>

My Yankee Diary, <a href="http://civilwarquilts.blogspot.com/2017/01/yankee-diary-introduction-to-carrie.html" target="_blank">Barbara Brackman's BOM for 2017</a>, is finished. My intention was to hand quilt this project, but I really did not get very far with that and chose to machine quilt it to get it done in 2018. I'm happy with the result-the quilt is light and luscious with texture and did I mention Finished? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'd like to go back and read the Yankee Diary blog entries to remind me of the symbolism of the blocks. Yankee Diary was based on the diary of a young woman, Caroline Cowles Richards -"Carrie", from upstate New York during the Civil War. Her diary was published and a digital version can be seen <a href="https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=nyp.33433082404488;view=1up;seq=15" target="_blank">here</a>. </div>

Jelly Roll rug. My Tacoma quilt group had a workshop to make a jelly roll rug. I don't often do projects like this but I thought I should join in. I used half a jelly roll to make my rug. Have not used it on the floor but instead I put it on a table in front of the bay window. I think it is too pretty to step on. I had a fun day making this but the prep and cost deter me from making another one. </div>

If you are a subscriber to "The Quilt Show" you will be familiar with these blocks. Every year TQS features a BOM which is free for subscribers. This year's quilt was from Edyta Sitar. Each month there were three different quilt blocks. You made three of each 6 inch block. I really enjoyed making all the blocks. I did not really like the layout or the center panel in the original so I came up with my own.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I grouped 9 blocks together which made 18 inch squares. The center of Edyta's quilt was a barn; I used a house block from Lori Holt's Farm Girl book. I decided to use up leftover fabric for the back. I cut 3 inch squares and pieced them together. What was I thinking? I wanted to get this quilt DONE, and here I was making another quilt top! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well, I finally got it done and quilted it in a meandering stitch on my Janome. Happy with the results and now it is onward with other objects. This one counts as a finished UFO for my Tacoma chapter contest. Yippee!</div>

<br />
I got the idea to make this quilt <a href="http://kleinmeisjequilts.blogspot.com/2018/05/unit-blocks-top-completed.html" target="_blank">here</a>. I love her solid and print quilts. I started this one at my Kieve quilt retreat. Lots of cutting in preparation before the retreat. I wanted a block that would be easy and all ready to go. This one certainly filled the bill. The units are all cut 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches. I had a stack of solid fat quarters that were waiting for a good project. The prints were all from my stash. I still have a big stack of rectangles cut out but this is the size quilt I wanted. I have nine rows of eight blocks. The blocks are 8 inches square so the top is 64 x 72 inches. Just the right size for curling up on the sofa.<br />
<br />
I will need to find backing fabric before I can start quilting. I think I will do a meandering stitch for this quilt. A meandering design will make it quick and easy to stitch.<br />

I have not had this pattern since 2006, but I'm sure I purchased it at least five years ago. I made it in two days this past week and even added a sleeve and made a hanger for the door into my sewing room.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of the things I wanted to do when I retired was work on seasonal or holiday themed wall hangings. As Halloween is approaching, I thought now would be a good time to work on this one. </div>

I've never been one to collect things like Santas or seasonal decorative items. I certainly like my "things" but those are more apt to be books and sewing items, not decor objects. I'm unlikely to buy plastic pumpkins and ghoulish figurines, but I do like this funny wall hanging!</div>

I am in the midst of making a fabric book that is all about remembering family vacations at Baxter State Park. I've done some photo transfer pages and I have been working on these two that evoke summer and the woods. </div>

The flowers were really fun to make. I came across a tutorial this week that showed how to make these and I just had to try it. Looks like summer to me! <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There's nothing like some creative time playing with fabric and thread to put me on track again. After yesterday''s grueling senate hearing, I needed to play. I worked in the garden later on. Yanking out weeds is great for stress!</div>

I will clean my sewing room soon. I make a big mess when I work on a project like this. Fabric, trim, rulers, scissors, odds and ends are scattered everywhere. I need to have everything out so I can really see what I have to work with but it is chaotic. I need to create my calm and tidy space again. (well, it's never really that tidy) After that, I would like to work on one of the two BOMs I started earlier this year that have languished for at least a month. Which one will it be?</div>

I've been making the Edyta Sitar BOM from The Quilt Show this year. I've really enjoyed sewing all these blocks. Three blocks each month and three of each, so by now I have quite a stack. I don't really like the center block Edyta designed so will come up with something different for my quilt. I will finish this quilt over the fall and winter. </div>

Brigid is a doll I made with my daughter. Zoe painted the face on fabric a couple of years ago. I sewed the doll and needlefelted the hair around that time. I did not really like the results but got it out this summer to show DD when she came to visit. She wasn't as bad as I remembered so after DD left, I sewed up some doll clothes out of fabric we had dyed. All my experience making my own clothes during my teens and 20s came back to me. So much fun!</div>

This silk applique quilt was another show stopper. And the quilter gathered lots of ribbons. This quilt has been shown around the country and in magazines. Real dedication and expertise. Just wonderful.</div>

The show was really good this year. Many quilts from all levels of expertise and <u>all</u> are wonderful to see. Everyone mentions that they like seeing the beginner or simpler quilts (or as I like to say, the quilts made by us mortals) as well as the expert quilts. </div>

I laid out the quilt blocks on my bed (on top of "Hexie Cats" and took a picture. It really helps to take photos when arranging quilt blocks. The red and darker pinks really pop out so I tried to arrange the blocks with those blades in different positions around the quilt top. </div>

I quilted the top on my domestic sewing machine. I love the diagonal lines. Not so sure about the blue blocks, but the overall effect is good. The Dresden Plates needed some quilting, too, so I did a double zig zag. I really didn't like how some of them turned out but my stitching improved and I like the final result. </div>

<br />
What does a long weekend feel like when you are retired? Pretty much the same as the rest of the week, but with hubby home, too. Pretty nice! Saturday was a day to go recycling and shop for groceries. We did some comparison shopping at Lowe's and Home Depot for wheelbarrows. I bought a cowl neck top pattern at Joann's. The pattern price is $19.95, good grief! Joann's always sells patterns at 40% off but I got this one for $1.99 because there was a sale.<br />
<br />
Sunday: A canoe paddle on Pleasant Pond. We put in at the Route 197 end and paddled for a while. We decided to turn around while we still had paddling power in us. When we headed back we were facing the wind. Despite not being windy, there was still enough of a breeze to make it hard work, especially for two people who did not canoe at all last year. Looking for a little 2-3 HP motor for these situations.<br />
<br />
Dresden Plate update: I've been making excellent progress sewing my plates to the background fabric. I'm using Robert Kaufman solid fabric from The Busy Thimble. It looks like muslin without the specks and is a very nice quality. I'm on #12; well on my way to completing the 16. Yesterday I downloaded the Audible app on my phone and started listening to Endurance. I have not been a subscriber for several years but I can still listen to my books in the library. What could be more enjoyable than hand sewing and listening to a good (true) story.<br />
