Gypsy Karavan inspiration

This beautifully embroidered crazy quilt block can be seen at Gypsy Karavan's blog.  Look closely at how the motifs and seam treatments were done. The feathery flowers at lower left have chain stitch stems and fly stitch flowers. I love the flowering vine on the red patch. The green stem may be coral stitch with detached chain leaves. The little yellow flowers are french knots with pink pistol stitch. The scalloped treatment above this vine is simply chain stitch. Pistol stitch again in white. Buttonhole flowers, fishbone leaves, more fly stitch in the flowers. Many simple stitches, but all done so carefully and beautifully! I'm going to refer to this when I work on my crazy quilt block. I've printed this block and will add it to my embroidery notebook so I can have it handy.

Happy Summer!

Elaine Quehl

Here's a Bonnie McCaffery video of Canadian artist Elaine Quehl. I thought you might enjoy seeing how these intricate and intriguing quilts are made. What patience this woman must have to complete this process, but her effort is just delightful, don't you agree? I'm sure we would all like to see these in person, eh?
